Press Statement 12/15/06

City of Trotwood Public Safety Director Mike Etter announced that the Montgomery County Grand Jury reported a felony indictment charging Trotwood Police Officer Archie Swanson with one count of Theft in Office.  This is a third degree felony and carries a maximum penalty of 5 years incarceration and up to a $10,000 fine.

On October of this year, the Trotwood Police Department discovered a potential theft of money from the police property room.  With assistance from the Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Office, a criminal investigation was conducted.  The investigation revealed that approximately $30,000 was taken from the property room by this defendant.  None of the cases involving missing money are active cases.

Archie Swanson was the property custodian and detective.  At the time of the allegation, he was placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.  Swanson has been with the Trotwood Police Department for 7 ˝ years.

Montgomery County Prosecutor Mat Heck, Jr. said, “The Trotwood Police Department handled this matter diligently and professionally.  Fortunately, all of the cases in which money was taken were closed cases.  No cases were compromised by this defendants’ actions.”

Trotwood Public Safety Director Mike Etter said, “We hold the department and its employees accountable in our position of public trust.  We will not allow the integrity of the department or its property room to be compromised.”
