PRESS RELEASE
July 20, 2007
Mathias H. Heck, Jr.
Prosecuting Attorney
Montgomery County Grand Jury Returns
No Indictment in Police Shooting
On
April 2, 2007, Dayton Police Officer Gregory A. Orick was dispatched
to the 200 block of Basswood Avenue on a report of shots fired.
When he arrived, he witnessed a disturbance in front of 218 Basswood
involving 18 year old Nolan Hunter. The officer witnessed Hunter in
possession of and fire a .25 caliber semi-automatic handgun, and
then point the gun at another man, with whom Hunter was arguing. In
order to protect the intended victim, Police Officer Orick fired his
weapon at Hunter, striking him in the neck. Hunter later died at
the hospital.
All
of the evidence was presented to the Montgomery County Grand Jury.
The Grand Jury determined that Officer Orick was justified in his
actions, and therefore voted to ignore the case and not indict on
any charges.
