Press conference – CHRISTOPHER RYAN KING 06-CR-4067

10-04-06

Today, the Montgomery County Grand Jury has indicted 28 year old CHRISTOPHER RYAN KING, of Escondido, California on:

·         12 cts - Unlawful Sexual Conduct With A Minor (F-3)

·         1 ct - Importuning (F-5)

On September 24, 2006 the defendant was arrested at the Days Inn in Brookville, Ohio by the Brookville Police Department.  The victim, a 13 year old girl, was reported missing by her parents earlier that same day.  The defendant had travelled by plane from San Diego to Dayton, and then by taxi to Brookville in order to be with the girl, whom he met on the internet in a chat room. The defendant was arrested.

The defendant now faces 13 felonies for his sexual activity with the victim.  The defendant faces a potential 61 years in prison.

These types of cases are shocking because of the ease with which these predators locate a young victim.

·         Statistics show that child pornographers and “travelers” (adults who travel to be with children they meet online for sex) typically have an average of 30 victims before they are finally apprehended by police.

According to a study by the US Department of Justice:

·         One in four (25%) 10-17 year olds had an unwanted exposure to pictures of naked people or people having sex, while they surfed the internet.

·         One in five (20%) 10-17 year olds reported receiving an unwanted sexual solicitation. -

70% of those solicited were girls, 30% were boys.

·         One in 33 children ages 10-17 received an aggressive sexual solicitation. An aggressive sexual solicitation means the predator made, or attempted to make personal contact with the child.  75% of these predators asked to meet the child in person; 34% received a telephone call from the offender; 18% actually showed up at the child’s home!

We need to protect our children.  We need to be aware of what they are doing and who they are hanging out with.  Children ages 12-17 spend a substantial amount of time on the internet, and it is estimated that 91% of youth have access to the internet.  We need to be especially aware of their online activity.

·         It is vitally important that children never give out personal information in ‘chat rooms’ or on personal web pages like ‘my space’.

·         Never meet someone in person that they chat with online.

The internet is the perfect medium for predators seeking children for sex.  As we see, a predator will travel across the country to have sex with a young victim.

The Brookville Police Department and Det. Duncan did a great job investigating this case, and arresting the defendant just hours after it was reported to them by the mother of the victim.   We take these cases very seriously.  We will not allow our children to be victimized, abused, sexually assaulted, molested or murdered.
